Spelling Bug is designed to teach users basic spelling using a game format. Spelling Bug consists of nine chapters, and within each chapter are multiple words. To present words, Spelling Bug uses playful, visually appealing images followed by a pronunciation of the word. Users must then spell the word for the corresponding image by placing a set of lettered tiles in the correct order in the boxes below the image. If users put a letter in the wrong order, the letter bounces back to its place below the image. Therefore, users must correctly spell the word and hit the next arrow before moving  to the following word. Once users complete all the words for a chapter, they may select the next chapter. As users progress through the chapters, the words become more complex, which allows users to grow with the app.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can use this app to help prepare students to engage in a class spelling bee. To do so, students can practice spelling words on the app. When students are ready, teachers can begin a spelling bee using the words found in the app’s chapters before progressing to more challenging words not included in the app’s chapters.
  2. Teachers can use this app to start a Spelling Train. To do so, the app will provide the first word for the Spelling Train, and students must spell the word out loud correctly. Next, students must then take the last letter in the word provided by the app to spell a new word. For example, if the app requires students to spell “cat,” students would then have to select a word that starts with “t” to begin the Spelling Train, such as “tall.” After correctly spelling “tall,” students would then have to select a word that begins with “l.” At this point, the Spelling Train activity will be fully engaged. When a word is spelled incorrectly, the class can return to the app for the next word to start a new Spelling Train.
  3. While engaging the app, students must write down each new word they learn a total of five times to help them memorize the correct spelling.
  4. While students engage a chapter from the app, teachers can write down the words they spell on the board. After the chapter is complete, students will then work together to alphabetize the words before moving on to the next chapter.
