Survey Monkey: A Best App for Research
Summary : The Best App for Gathering Opinions Quickly
Survey Monkey allows users to create, send, and analyze surveys. To create a survey after registering with the app, users must tap the “+” button on the bottom right of the screen and then choose if they will create it from scratch or a template. If users choose to create it from scratch, they first title the survey and then tap the “+” button on the bottom right of the screen to add questions. Users may add multiple choice, dropdown, comment box, matrix/rating, image, and text-based questions. If users choose to create a survey from a template, they must choose the survey’s topic by tapping it from the top row and then tap its subtopic from below. Next, Survey Monkey will load the survey template, which users will then be able to view and customize by tapping the “+” button. When drafting a survey from scratch or from a template, users can tap the “…” to access additional options, such as: adding logos, previewing the survey, and color options. When finished creating the survey, users will be returned to the app’s home screen, where they can send it out. To do so, users must tap their survey’s name and then the “Send” option, which allows users to share their survey over social media, email, and text. This option also provides users with their survey’s URL, so it can be accessed online. As individuals complete it, users can monitor their responses using the “Analyze” button, which displays survey response data using graphs and percentages.

- After reading a text or viewing a video about a current event, students can create a survey based on it using this app. The survey can solicit if people agree or disagree with different attributes, responsibilities, or happenings related to the current event. Students can send the survey out by posting its URL address to class or social media websites and over email. Once students have collected enough responses, they can compose a paragraph that explains the consensus opinion about the current event.
- As part of a research assignment, teachers can have students create a survey about the topic using this app. The survey can have 10-20 items on it, and students can post its URL to school and social media websites, and they can send it out via email. Once students collect a specific amount of responses (as set by the teacher) or the time period allowed for survey responses ends, students can analyze their results. Students can present their results in the form of a research paper using the Quip or WPS Office app, as a presentation using the PopBoardz or Prezi app, or as a movie using the Adobe Voice or TouchCast app.
- After students read a text, teachers can have them create a 10-question quiz about it using this app. (Please note, in this activity, students will be creating a quiz using the app, not surveying how others enjoyed the text.) Students can post the link to their quiz on the class website, and teachers can require at least five other students to complete the quiz. The student who created the survey can analyze the quiz results and determine what the most challenging question was and compose a paragraph that explains what made the question so challenging.
As an introductory activity at the beginning of the year, teachers can have students create a 5-10 question survey using this app. Students’ surveys should ask questions that pertain to their classmates’ interests, hobbies, and activities. Students can post the link to their survey on a class website and teachers can require students to complete at least five of their classmates’ surveys that are posted to the class website. After at least five classmates have responded to the survey, the student who created the survey can analyze the results and write a paragraph that summarizes them. The paragraph can be written using the Quip, Office Offline, or WPS Office app and then emailed to their teacher for grading.
