SwipeSpeare – Modern Shakespeare

SwipeSpeare contains multiple features to help teach and understand Shakespeare’s works.  SwipeSpeare’s resources include a biography of Shakespeare, copies of Shakespeare’s plays and poems, modern translations of Shakespeare’s plays, lesson plans to support the teaching of Shakespeare, and study guides for 17 plays. Additionally, a comprehensive dictionary and a note-taking feature are included.

Instructional Ideas

1. When reading a Shakespearean play, teachers can have students critique this app’s modern translation of the play by comparing it to the original text.
2. As students read a Shakespearean work, teachers can require students to identify a specific number of Shakespearean words that they do not know, and define them using this app’s dictionary feature. Moreover, students can use this app’s note-taking feature to log their new vocabulary words.
3. When composing a literary analysis of a Shakespearean work, teachers can require students to investigate this app’s version of Shakespeare’s biography to see if they can identify any connections between Shakespeare’s life and the literary work.
4. (Please note: Students might be more likely to make connections between Shakespeare’s sonnets and his biography than comparing plays to his biography.)
