Once users feel knowledgeable about sailing rules, regulations, and signals, they can choose the “quiz” option that assesses their understanding of sailing. In the quiz option, users are given a sailing scenario and then a “Yes/No” question. Users are to select the correct answer, and YOU-TACK! provides the answer and rulebook references for the answer.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can create a class competition around this app. First, teachers can have students study the signal flags and their meanings. When all the students are ready, teachers can show students a signal flag, and the first student who correctly states the meaning behind the flag wins a point. If a student is called on but cannot recall the correct information, the teacher can show the signal flag again and then call on the next student. The first student who answers correctly earns a specific amount of points (e.g., 5, 10, or 15) and the highest point score wins.
  2. After studying sailing rules using this app, teachers can show students a video of yacht racing during which there is a rule infringement. (Videos can be accessed from YouTube.) Students can then work to identify the rule infringement, and this app can be used to support them as they do so. Once the rule is identified, teachers can have students explain the infringement by composing a short piece of writing.
  3. As a mini-project, teachers can assign groups of students a sailing rule. Students will then have to research the rule using this app. Next, the students will have to act out two scenarios. One scenario will require students to act out the rule when it is not broken, and the other scenario will have students acting out the rule when it is broken. As the group presents, the other students in the class who are watching will have to select which scenario shows the rule being followed correctly.
