Description: This app lesson will develop math students’ geometry skills in understanding how to cut complex shapes into simple shapes before adding their areas together.
Instructional Objective: Students will use three different applications to explore the composition of shapes, draw shapes on their own, and create flash cards to review at home or with each other.
Step 1: Students will use the Pythagorea app on the “normal” difficulty level. This app will teach students how to use straight lines to cut shapes into equal parts to determine area. This app will also teach students how to construct rhombuses with diagonal lines. The students will use area formulas given to them to calculate exact areas.
Step 2: Students will use the iRuler app to draw shapes themselves using paper and pencil. This app will help them draw straight lines through the shapes and will also help them measure sides to calculate the areas. This will give students time to do some hands on exploring without teacher instruction.
Step 3: Students will use the Flashcards+ By Chegg app to create geometry flash cards explaining how to divide shapes into different smaller shapes. They will use these flashcards with friends in their class to study for tests. They will also be expected to use these flashcards at home while doing homework to retain area formulas.
