Timeline WW1 with Dan Snow chronicles WWI from 1914—1919. Featuring a detailed timeline, users are able to explore the different events that happened during The Great War. To navigate Timeline WW1, users first tap the “Timeline” button on the bottom of the screen, and then they can tap the “+” and “–“ buttons on the top left of the screen to view the events by day, week, month, six months, and year. Included in the timeline’s content are images, videos, encyclopedia-style entries, and commentary about WWI. To view maps of WWI, users can choose the “Explore the Map” feature on the bottom of the app, and they can learn about where significant events happened chronologically. To adjust the map’s timeframe, users must slide the light-green arrows on the map’s timeline, which is located at the top of the screen. When users come across an item of interest in either the timeline or map, they can use the app’s “Bookmark” feature to save it, and the “Search” feature lets users quickly investigate the app’s content for a specific battle, fact, or person. There are several additional options as well, which can be accessed only after making an in-app purchase.
Instructional Ideas
- Teachers can let students browse the timeline. As they browse, teachers can require students to identify 10 facts of interest. Students can be required to summarize the facts and then explain why they find those facts so interesting.
- After viewing the timeline and map, teachers can have students determine which year they think is the most important year during WWI. Teachers can then require students to compose a persuasive essay that argues why the year they selected is, in fact, the most important.
- Teachers can have students review the timeline for people. Teachers can then assign students to identify the most significant person, unsung hero, and biggest villain of WWI. (Teachers can vary and modify these categories to their liking.) Students can then create a slide in the Educreation, PaperPort Notes, Explain Everything, or Bamboo Paper app for each person.
- If students are completing a research project about WWI, they can use this app as a reference.
- Teachers can have students study this app’s content and then research events that are not included in this app. When/if students do find information not included in this app pertaining to WWI, teachers can have students create an entry that could be added to the timeline.
