Tour the Universe: A Best App for the Science Classroom
Summary : Explore The Universe Without Leaving Your Device!
Tour the Universe provides users with a map of the universe that they can explore. Users navigate the universe with the scale provided at the bottom of this app’s screen. Starting at Earth, users tap the scale to view different bodies—planets, stars, moons, bursts of light—as close as the moon to as distant as the edge of the universe. When users select a specific body to examine, they tap its image at the bottom of the screen and a larger image and abbreviated description of the body appears. Users can then learn more about the body by tapping the links on the right of the screen. These links will connect users with videos, images, web pages, and reference articles about that heavenly body.
Instructional Ideas
- Teachers can assign students a research project about a heavenly body. To complete this project, teachers can require students to browse this app’s content to identify the body they wish to research, and then use the provided resources to learn about it.
- To further increase students’ digital-presentation skills, teachers can have students transfer the content provided in this app about a heavenly body into a multimedia presentation.
- To help students recall information about different heavenly bodies, teachers can have students create flashcards using the Pro Flashcard app. To structure this activity, teachers can assign each student a heavenly body and then require them to identify 10 important facts, theories, or ideas about the heavenly body. To create the flashcards, teachers can have students type the name of the fact, idea, or theory on the front of the flashcard and detailed information on the back. Finally, teachers can then have students swap devices with a partner and let each partner study the flashcards.
