Summary : Can You Write Your Thoughts Using Only the Top 1,000 Most Commonly Used Words?
The Up-Goer Five Text Editor challenges users to express their thoughts with only the 1,000 most commonly used words. Users simply have to type their statement into the box provided, and the website will indicate which words are not included in the 1,000 most commonly used words. After typing their text, users can copy and paste it easily into other documents, social media sites, and more. If users wish to see example phrases written with this website, they can tap the “Random” button on the top right of the screen. Users can learn more about the history and functionality of the website by clicking the “How Does It Works” button on the bottom of the screen.
Instructional Ideas for Up-Goer Five Text Editor
- After reading a text or completing an activity, students can summarize it using this website. By doing so, students will have to focus on their word selection so that it explains what happened in the text while staying within the parameters set by this word bank.
- When learning technical vocabulary terms, teachers can have student write their own definitions for it using this website. That way, students will have to translate a term into an easy-to-understand definition. Students can then use the terms and their definition as part of a vocabulary flashcard deck on Quizlet.
- When students use a word that is not included in the top 1,000 words, they can lookup that word in the Word Count website to find its ranking. Teachers can then have students research the methodologies used by the two websites. When ready, teachers can facilitate a class conversation about the two websites by asking: (1) What do you think accounts for the difference in rankings?, (2) Which website do you prefer for writing when you are only allowed to use the top 1,000 words?, and (3) What is the purpose of these websites? Students can respond by first sharing their thoughts with a partner before taking part of a whole-class conversation.
- When solving a math problem, students can write out how they completed it using this website. Or, after viewing a piece of art, students can explain their interpretation of it using this website. That way, students will be able to explain their process in terms that are easy to understand.
