Summary : Digital Venn Diagrams Made Easy by the International Reading Association
Venn Diagram lets users create Venn diagrams on their device. When opening the app, users must first register by inputting their name and selecting an avatar. On the next screen, users begin creating their Venn diagram by titling their project and then tapping the “start” button. The app then brings them to their Venn diagram. When ready, users can save their Venn diagram as a draft so they can continue working on it at a later date. Or, users can save it as a final by tapping the “finish” button. By saving it as a final, the app will automatically save their Venn diagram to their camera roll. Users can also email their Venn diagram from this app as well.
Instructional Ideas
- Before students create Venn diagrams, teachers can demonstrate how this app works by conducting a think aloud that explains how to input information in the app and how the Venn diagram compares that information.
- After reading a narrative text, students can create a Venn diagram using this app that compares the protagonist to the antagonist. Qualities or actions made by the characters can serve as the basis of comparison. Once students have completed their Venn diagram, they can email it to their teacher for grading.
- After studying different topics in a class, teachers can have students create Venn diagrams using this app as part of a review. For example, comparisons between the wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan can be made in social studies. Comparisons between Newton’s Laws of Motion can be made in science. Comparisons between different styles and periods can be made in art. When finished, students can post their Venn diagrams to a class website so they can be viewed by their classmates or email their work to their teacher.
- As a brainstorming activity before writing a comparative paper, students can create a Venn diagram using this app that outlines their paper.
