VivaVideo allows users to create movies using their iPad. From the app’s main menu, users can select the “Create” or “My Studio” option. With the “Create” option, users can explore the Capture, Photo MV, Video Edit, and Item Center features. With the “Capture” feature, users can create their own movie. After tapping the “Create” button, users are presented a recording field with options below and a “camera” button for recording. By swiping the recording field sideways, users can select different themes. Users can also change themes by tapping the “wand” button under the recording field. Users can choose to record in fast forward or slow motion by tapping the “snail” button, and they can reverse the camera’s orientation by tapping the “camera” button. When ready to record, users can hold the “camera” button and record up to five minutes. After the recording, users tap the “next” button to review it. If satisfied, they tap the “next” button again, and they will be able to save their movie to their gallery, post it to social media websites, or email it. The “Photo MV” feature lets users select photos saved to their iPad’s gallery and use them to create a movie using the same functions included in the “Capture” feature. The “Video Edit” feature allows users to add themes to videos already saved on their iPad and share them. The “Item Center” lets users download new themes and options for their movies. To view and share the movies created using this app, users can use the “My Studio” option.

Instructional Ideas

1. Instead of making a traditional oral presentation, teachers can allow students to record themselves making the presentation and then play the recording in class. Students can use different backgrounds, scenes, and themes to enhance the quality of their presentation. After showing the presentation in class, the student who made it can take questions related to the information presented.
2. After reading a narrative text, teachers can assign groups of students to act out key scenes as part of a reader’s theater extension activity. After each group has recorded their scene, teachers can play the scenes in order so students can see the story. The movies can also be posted to a class website to help students review.
3. As part of a flipped classroom or blended-learning activity, teachers can record themselves giving a lecture using this app. They then can require students to view the lecture, take notes, and complete an activity.
4. Teachers can have students engage in a recorded debate. To do so, teachers can create a video in which they introduce a topic for debate. Next, each student can be required to respond to the prompt by creating a video in which they explain their stance on the topic. Teachers can set certain parameters for student videos, such as: (1) video length, (2) substantive comments in the video, and (3) professionalism, among others.
5. In music class, teachers can require students to record themselves playing a piece of music using this app, and post it to a class website. In response, classmates can offer feedback about the performance by posting: (1) what they liked about the performance, (2) how the performance could be improved, and (3) recommendations for another piece of music for the student to play.
6. In art class, teachers can have students record a movie showing a piece of work they created, an explanation about their inspiration for the piece, and how they made it. Students can respond to the movie by posting: (1) what they liked about the piece, (2) recommendations for where the piece could be displayed, and (3) how the piece made them feel.
7. In addition to a traditional research project, teachers can require students to record a movie that explains the research they conducted and its meaningfulness.
