SuVoBi 2 is designed to teach users new vocabulary words in preparation for standardized tests using a quiz format. When engaging SuVobi 2, users are first required to make a selection from the Vocab List library, where they can select the test for which they are preparing (e.g., SAT, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT), and users can select more than one list of words. After selecting a list and returning to the Home Page, users can click Learn and go through a series of reviews and drills. The reviews introduce users to new words, and provide the definitions of the words, the parts of speech, and synonyms. Users may also hear the word by tapping the speaker button. After a series of reviews, users are then drilled. When engaging in the drills, users are either given the word or the definition of the word, and they must select the correct definition or word to earn credits. If the wrong selection is made, the answer is shown and the next question is presented.
Instructional Ideas
- When engaging in this app, teachers can create a review game by having students participate in the same drill level at the same time. At the end of the drill, students can report how many credits they earned in a single session.
- Teachers can assign students to work separately or in groups to uncover new words and definitions. When students identify a word that they do not know, they can complete a graphic organizer such as the Frayer Word Box to deepen their understanding of the word.
- While engaging this app, teachers can have students keep a log of the words that they do not know. Next, teachers can create a writing assignment, such as a short story or constructed response, in which students have to incorporate those words into their writing. Or, teachers could have students create entries for a classroom word wall.
