VSB Music History contains tutorials, quizzes, and musical exercises aligned to units. Before users can view the units, however, they must register or login. (Registration is completely free.) By registering, users will create an account that be accessed on www.www.ericshs.com. After registering, users are able to access the units, which are ordered so users begin with Orientation, and then progress to Music of Baroque Era, Johan Sebastian Bach, Music of the Classical Era, Beethoven and Mozart, and Romantic Era. Users are presented the units in sequence, and users must view the unit’s video before proceeding to the next unit. Included in each unit is a script of the video and an accompanying quiz. When users take the quiz, VSB Music History records their results, which can be accessed following the quiz. Another feature in this app is The Guitar. With it, users first select a difficulty level. Once selected, users choose a musical piece that is played. As the music is played, users are to tap corresponding buttons that are synchronized with the music. Once the music finishes, users are presented with a report for their accuracy.
Instructional Ideas
- Teachers can have students complete a tutorial and take the quiz aligned to the tutorial. Afterward, teachers can have students complete a 3-2-1 organizer in which students write 3 facts they learned about unit’s topic, 2 opinions they have in response to the unit, and 1 question they have related to the unit. After students have completed their 3-2-1 organizers, teachers can facilitate a class conversation by reading the different questions and having students research answers to the questions using their iPads.
- After becoming familiar with this app, teachers can have students create a unit for modern musicians. To complete the unit, students must first research the musician and then create a video, written report, and quiz. The video can be made using the TouchCast, iMovie, Videolicious, or Qwiki for iPhone app. The written report and quiz can be made using the WPS Office, Word, Quick Office, or CloudOn apps. Once students create all their materials, teachers can load them into their learning community app (e.g., Edmodo, ClassFlow, or Schoology).
- Teachers can use this app as a springboard to a larger research project. To do so, students would first need to complete all units. Next, teachers can have students go back through the app’s units and quizzes and select one that interests them. Students can then explain why they are interested in the unit and propose a research question for their project. Example research questions include: (1) How is the Baroque era influential to modern music? (2) Was Beethoven or Mozart more talented? (3) How was Romantic-era music reflected in the literature of the day?
