If the selection is correct, the light bulb beside each word blows out. If the selection is incorrect, users are given another chance. At the end of the round, users are presented with another quiz in which they must match 18 words into nine pairs by making connections between them. The users’ percentile is displayed as they progress through the rounds.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can create a review game using Word Challenge by having students participate in the same level drill at the same time. At the end of the drill, students can report their percentile scores.
  2. While using Word Challenge, teachers can ask students to identify a word that they do not know. Teachers can then instruct students to complete a graphic organizer, such as the Frayer Word Box, to deepen their understanding of the unknown word.
  3. Once students have become familiar with the functionality of Word Challenge, teachers can require students to create a new version of the game (either paper-based or by using an app such as Educreations) to include the parts of speech not already in the app (e.g., prepositions, verbs, interjections, adverbs, and conjunctions).
