Yoshirt – Make Your Own Custom T-shirt, Sweater, Socks, Etc. and Remix Your Outfit

YoShirt allows users to create t-shirts right from their iPad. After launching the app, users can tap the yellow “T-Shirt” button on the bottom of the screen, which will take them to the t-shirt design workspace. Using the buttons on the bottom of the screen, users can add pictures, text, designs, symbols, and colors to their t-shirt. To view their t-shirt design on clothing, users can tap the “T-shirt” button on the top right of the screen, which lets them see the design and cost on a variety of clothing options. Users can share their design by tapping the “Upload” button on the top right of the screen and sending the design via email, by copying it, or saving it to their camera roll. If users wish to purchase their design on the clothing they selected, they can tap the “Checkout” button on the bottom of the screen.

Instructional Ideas

1. After reading a narrative text, teachers can have students create a piece of clothing that a character from the story may wear using this app. Students can conduct research online to find images that represent the character and add them to the clothing. They can also include text and specific colors that represent the character. When students are finished, they can tap the “Upload” button to save their piece of clothing. Students can also write a rationale that explains how the clothing represents the character using the Quip, Hanx Writer, or WPS Office app. When finished, students can post the image of the clothing and their rationale to a class website.
2. As an art project, teachers can have students create a clothing line using this app. To do so, students will have to create a series of outfits using this app, and they can save images of those outfits, which can then be imported into a presentation using the PopBoardz, Haiku Deck, or Prezi app. This activity concludes with students giving a “fashion show” using the presentation they made to their fellow classmates.
3. As part of vocabulary building exercises, students can design shirts that demonstrate their understanding of the words they are studying. For example, students can include the word, pictures that represent it, images that symbolize it, and its definition on the shirt. Students can email their teacher the shirt they created, and the teacher can print them out and put them on a word wall.
4. When studying a historical event, teachers can have students use this app to create clothing that people during that time period would have worn. Students can save an image of the clothing they made and post it to a class website. Classmates can then view and respond to it by stating what they thought was authenticate and ideas for improving it.
