Have you seen some videos that are split in the middle with two separate videos playing at the same time? Playing two videos side by side is actually a fairly interesting technique that is not only visually impressive but also useful for showing different perspectives simultaneously.
Although you may feel that using a split-screen effect is beyond your editing skills, nothing could be further from the truth. If you use Movavi Video Editor you’ll see that it is actually really easy to play two videos side by side, and should have no problem at all applying the effect to any of your videos.
How to Apply a Split-Screen Effect
In order to play two videos side by side the only thing that you’ll need other than Movavi Video Editor are two video files. Assuming you already have them, you should launch the editor and select ‘Create project in full feature mode’ to get started.
The first thing that you should do is add both the videos that you want to play side by side to Movavi Video Editor. To do that, click on the ‘Add Media Files’ button then select both the videos and open them. Another way to add the videos is to drag and drop the files into the ‘Timeline’ area.
By default both the videos you added should appear in Movavi Video Editor’s ‘Timeline’ – one after the other. In order to create a split-screen effect however you will need to click and drag one of the videos upwards to an ‘Overlay Track’ that will appear right above the normal ‘Video Track’.
Next you should double click on the video in the ‘Overlay Track’ to start editing it, then open the list right above the ‘Preview’ window and select the ‘Side by side’ option. Beside the list you’ll see four icons that you can use to set where you want the video in the ‘Video Track’ to play – and as you’ll notice Movavi Video Editor will let you split the screen in half vertically or horizontally.
Once you’ve selected where the video will play, you can click ‘Apply’ and Movavi Video Editor will finalize the split screen effect. When you preview the video however you’ll notice that the audio from both videos play at the same time, which can sound chaotic to say the least.
To fix the problem with the audio, all you need to do is mute one of the videos. That is a piece of cake in Movavi Video Editor and you just need to click on the ‘Mute Track’ icon beside either the ‘Overlay Track’ or ‘Video Track’. It is worth noting that you could opt to mute both tracks, and add a completely new audio track of your own if you like.
Before you save your video, take a minute or two to try out some of the other features in Movavi Video Editor. Not only will they let you apply other filters and effects, but you could add background music, enhance the video quality, add captions, transform the frame, trim out unwanted parts, merge clips together, and more. If and when you’re satisfied, click ‘Export’ and save the video in a format of your choice or use one of the presets that are available.
