Description: This app lesson will develop English students’ comprehension of poetic tools and structure.
Instructional Objective: Students will compare and contrast two poems in a graphic organizer and then write their own poem that mirrors the poetic elements (symbolism, meter, meaning, rhyme, verse, form, alliteration, onomatopoeia, etc.) shared by the two poems analyzed.
Step 1: Students will use the Random Poem generator in Poemhunter to generate three different poem choices. Students will pick one of those poems and read it, keeping in mind the poem’s poetic tools and structure.
Step 2: Students will then read an assigned poem from Poetry Insight, keeping in mind this poem’s poetic tools and structure.
Step 3: Students will use Graphic Organizer to create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the symbolism, meter, meaning, rhyme, verse, form, alliteration, onomatopoeia, etc. of each poem. Students can be required to cite specific examples.
Step 4: Students will write their own poem in Pages utilizing the common poetic elements of the two analyzed poems and share their poem with the teacher.
